{"id":1001,"date":"2018-07-10T11:14:09","date_gmt":"2018-07-10T11:14:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/icae.global\/en\/?p=1001"},"modified":"2018-07-10T20:38:21","modified_gmt":"2018-07-10T20:38:21","slug":"easg-side-event-on-education-for-sustainability-at-the-hlpf-2018-in-new-york","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/icae.global\/en\/2018\/07\/easg-side-event-on-education-for-sustainability-at-the-hlpf-2018-in-new-york\/","title":{"rendered":"At the beginning stands education: HLPF Side event on \u201cEducation for Sustainability\u201d in New York"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On the occasion of the 2018 session of the\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/hlpf\/2018\">High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF)<\/a><\/u>\u00a0\u2013 United Nations\u2019 central platform for follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ICAE, in the framework of the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.educationacademia.org\/\">Education and Academia Stakeholder Group (EASG)<\/a><\/strong><a name=\"_ftnref1\"><\/a><a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/928E5E2F-1218-46A9-AC97-B598A3A11470#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]\u00a0<\/sup><\/a>organized a\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/hlpf\/2018#programme\">side event<\/a><\/u>\u00a0on <strong>Education for Social, Economic and Environmental Sustainability. <\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1037\" src=\"http:\/\/icae.global\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/WhatsApp-Image-2018-07-09-at-21.42.03-300x225.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/icae.global\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/WhatsApp-Image-2018-07-09-at-21.42.03-300x225.jpeg 300w, http:\/\/icae.global\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/WhatsApp-Image-2018-07-09-at-21.42.03-600x450.jpeg 600w, http:\/\/icae.global\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/WhatsApp-Image-2018-07-09-at-21.42.03-768x576.jpeg 768w, http:\/\/icae.global\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/WhatsApp-Image-2018-07-09-at-21.42.03-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, http:\/\/icae.global\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/WhatsApp-Image-2018-07-09-at-21.42.03.jpeg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The event gathered over 70 civil society activists, teachers, academics and government authorities and officials to discuss the trends, gaps and main features of education in the context of the Sustainable Development Agenda. \u00a0From different perspectives (civil society, governments and academia), the event provided a comprehensive analysis of barriers and challenges of education for sustainable development. Discussion focused on the inter-sectoral approaches needed to promote dialogue and coordination in the education sector, in tune with the recognition of the indivisibility and interdependence of all human rights that are reflected across the 17 SDGs.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1038\" src=\"http:\/\/icae.global\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/WhatsApp-Image-2018-07-09-at-21.41.32-300x225.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/icae.global\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/WhatsApp-Image-2018-07-09-at-21.41.32-300x225.jpeg 300w, http:\/\/icae.global\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/WhatsApp-Image-2018-07-09-at-21.41.32-600x450.jpeg 600w, http:\/\/icae.global\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/WhatsApp-Image-2018-07-09-at-21.41.32-768x576.jpeg 768w, http:\/\/icae.global\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/WhatsApp-Image-2018-07-09-at-21.41.32-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, http:\/\/icae.global\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/WhatsApp-Image-2018-07-09-at-21.41.32.jpeg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The speakers discussed challenges, practices and discourses, which threaten the realization of SDG 4, with the aim of developing inter-sectoral strategies and coordination among different actors in defence of education. <strong>Vernor Mu\u00f1oz\u00a0<\/strong>(Global Campaign for Education, GCE)\u00a0spoke about the right to an education framework, that should not be reduced to access and provisional resources as it is about the content of education. He said that \u201cwe all have the right to a good quality education, which means that the content should reach the aims of education as stated in the international human rights framework.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Katarina Popovic\u00a0<\/strong>(International Council for Adult Education, ICAE) challenged the audience with the question: \u201cWhat happened to lifelong learning?\u00a0 SDG4 on Education is only about formal education and children.\u201c She presented the \u00a0thesis that we are not on track when it comes to the education goal 4 and that more needs to be done if we want that education fulfills the important task of contribution of contributing to the implementation of all SDGs.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"_ftn1\"><\/a><strong>Megan McHaney<\/strong>\u00a0introduced the Bridge 47 \u2013 Building Global Citizenship \u00a0project, \u00a0co-created and implemented by 16 European and global civil society organizations; ICAE is one of our partners. Bridge 47 \u2013 Building Global Citizenship mobilizes global civil society to contribute to global justice and eradication of poverty through Global Citizenship Education (GCE). Global Citizenship Education underpins implementation of SDGs, because &#8220;it is a framework which, if we use it, can empower us to transform ourselves and our world.
