The workshop allowed 200 participants from some 15 countries to exchange live and on social media with the panelists gathered for the occasion. And this despite a chaotic start as an online hacker tried to sabotage our event.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Paulo Freire, still relevant<\/strong><\/p><p>Freire&#8217;s starting point is the critique of neutrality in education. Initially developed in popular literacy, the pedagogy of conscientization was not limited to adult education. Panelists recalled that Freire applied his approach in the Brazilian school system when he was Secretary of Education in Sao Paulo in the 1980s. Moreover, Freire&#8217;s approach is still present in many countries, as the panelists also testified.<br><br>The topicality of Freire&#8217;s pedagogy is evident in the multiple crises facing the peoples of the planet: health, economic and ecological. More broadly, it supports all challenges to relations of domination and oppression, as do feminist, anti-racist, and decolonial pedagogies. Freire&#8217;s approach, based on dialogue and respect, is one oriented towards engaging learners in political action for social transformation. As one participant suggested, the pedagogy of conscientization will always be relevant as long as there are inequalities.<\/p><p>One hundred years after the birth of the father of the pedagogy of conscientization, Paulo Freire, this type of popular education is more necessary than ever, given the growing inequalities and the deep crises facing the people of the planet: health crisis, economic crisis, and ecological crisis. <\/p><p><strong>Composition of the panel<\/strong><\/p><p>Moderated by <strong>Katarina Popovic,<\/strong> Secretary-General of ICAE and Professor of Philosophy in Serbia, the panel was composed of\u00a0:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Robbie Guevara<\/strong> \u2013 President of ICAE,\u00a0\u00a0former president of ASPBAE, he is from the Philippines, lives and works as university lecturer in Melbourn, activist and dedicated adult educator.<\/li><li><strong>Timothy Ireland<\/strong> \u2013Member of ICAE Executive Committe and ICAE vicepresident for Latin America, senior lecturer on the Postgraduate Programme in Education, at the Federal University of Para\u00edba, in Jo\u00e3o Pessoa, in the northeast of Brazil. He worked in the Ministry of Education as national director of adult and youth education and for UNESCO, among other roles, as the coordinator of Brazilian organizing committee for CONFINTEA VI in Brazil.<\/li><li><strong>Carole Avande Houndjo<\/strong> \u2013 Member of ICAE Executive Committee and vicepresident for Africa; she comes from the Republic of Benin, Africa and she is the coordinator of the West African network PAMOJA, with numerous roles and responsibility in various international bodies and processes.\u00a0<\/li><li><strong>Nelida\u00a0Cespedes Rossel<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0popular educator from Peru, she was active in the Council of Popular Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (CEAAL), where she was General-Secretary. She was also a Member of\u00a0theICAE Executive Committe for many years. L&#8217;atelier a permis \u00e0 200 participants-es d&#8217;une quinzaine de pays d&#8217;\u00e9changer en direct et sur les m\u00e9dias sociaux avec les pan\u00e9listes r\u00e9unis pour l&#8217;occasion. Et ce, malgr\u00e9 un d\u00e9but chaotique alors qu&#8217;un pirate informatique en ligne a tent\u00e9 de saboter notre \u00e9v\u00e9nement.&nbsp;<\/p><p><strong>Paulo Freire, toujours d&#8217;actualit\u00e9<\/strong><\/p><p>Le point de d\u00e9part de Freire est la critique de la neutralit\u00e9 en \u00e9ducation. D\u2019abord d\u00e9velopp\u00e9e en alphab\u00e9tisation populaire, la p\u00e9dagogie de la conscientisation ne s\u2019est pas limit\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9ducation des adultes. Les pan\u00e9listes ont rappel\u00e9 que Freire a mis son approche en application dans le r\u00e9seau scolaire br\u00e9silien, alors qu\u2019il \u00e9tait secr\u00e9taire \u00e0 l\u2019\u00c9ducation \u00e0 Sao Paulo dans les ann\u00e9es&nbsp;80. Par ailleurs, l\u2019approche de Freire est toujours pr\u00e9sente dans&nbsp;de nombreux pays, comme en t\u00e9moignaient aussi les pan\u00e9listes.<\/p><p>L\u2019actualit\u00e9 de la p\u00e9dagogie de Freire est \u00e9vidente devant les multiples crises devant lesquelles les peuples de la plan\u00e8te sont aux prises&nbsp;: sanitaire, \u00e9conomique et \u00e9cologique. Elle soutient plus largement toutes les remises en question des rapports de domination et d\u2019oppression, comme le font les p\u00e9dagogies f\u00e9ministe, antiraciste et d\u00e9coloniale.&nbsp;L\u2019approche de Freire, bas\u00e9e sur le dialogue et le respect, en est une orient\u00e9e vers l\u2019engagement des apprenants-es dans une action politique de transformation sociale. El taller permiti\u00f3 a 200 participantes de unos 15 pa\u00edses intercambiar opiniones con los panelistas reunidos para la ocasi\u00f3n, tanto en directo como en las redes sociales. Y esto, a pesar de un comienzo ca\u00f3tico cuando un hacker en l\u00ednea intent\u00f3 sabotear nuestro evento.&nbsp;<\/p><p><strong>Paulo Freire, sigue siendo relevante<\/strong><\/p><p>El punto de partida de Freire es la cr\u00edtica a la neutralidad en la educaci\u00f3n. Desarrollada inicialmente en la alfabetizaci\u00f3n popular, la pedagog\u00eda de la concienciaci\u00f3n no se limit\u00f3 a la educaci\u00f3n de adultos. Los ponentes recordaron que Freire aplic\u00f3 su enfoque en el sistema escolar brasile\u00f1o cuando era Secretario de Educaci\u00f3n en Sao Paulo en la d\u00e9cada de 1980. Adem\u00e1s, el enfoque de Freire sigue presente en muchos pa\u00edses, como tambi\u00e9n atestiguaron los ponentes.<\/p><p>La actualidad de la pedagog\u00eda de Freire se manifiesta en las m\u00faltiples crisis a las que se enfrentan los pueblos del planeta: sanitaria, econ\u00f3mica y ecol\u00f3gica. M\u00e1s ampliamente, apoya todos los desaf\u00edos a las relaciones de dominaci\u00f3n y opresi\u00f3n, al igual que las pedagog\u00edas feministas, antirracistas y decoloniales. El enfoque de Freire, basado en el di\u00e1logo y el respeto, est\u00e1 orientado a involucrar a los alumnos en la acci\u00f3n pol\u00edtica para la transformaci\u00f3n social.
