For many members of the WSF International Council (IC), it was the WSF that gave new hope to alter globalization movements around the world. According to the Nepalese organizing committee, a total of 50,000 participants turned up on the forum’s website, if we calculate the number each day. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres sent a message of solidarity.

Numerous participants and remarkable diversity

More than 1,400 organizations from six continents and 98 countries were present. 400 activities were recorded, and over 60 declarations expressed the commitment of networks from all over the world to work towards another, fairer and more just world.

If the numbers were there this time, so too was the diversity of participants, particularly at the WSF’s opening march on February 15. There were people from the worlds of labor, agriculture, and peasantry, citizens’ organizations, trade unions, women’s organizations, LGBTQI, indigenous groups, various ethnic communities, and different social movements.

This success was due above all to Nepal’s social organizations and movements. The social forum dynamic was well entrenched in the Nepalese social landscape, and the local organizing committee took full advantage of this reality.

Less international participation

Foreign participation was lower. Organizations have fewer resources, and the virtual world fills many international coordination needs. Hosting a major international event is becoming more problematic in economic and environmental terms, and more complex in terms of logistics. We probably won’t be seeing rallies like those held in Brazil in the first decade of the 2000s any time soon.
For social movements across the globe, this success is as much an encouragement as a marker of what’s possible. The reality of mobilization may be less significant, but the challenge of mobilizing and networking internationally remains crucial.

Social forums every year

The next WSF will take place in 2026 in Benin, Africa. This was the main decision taken following WSF 2024 at a review meeting of the WSF International Council. Another bid had emerged, that of Colombia. It’s only a postponement.

However, other thematic world social forums are continuing. In Bolivia, the Pan-Amazonian Social Forum – FOSPA – will take place from June 12 to 15. It aims to prepare for international mobilization in the run-up to COP 30 in Brazil. In Colombia, the World Social Forum on Transformative Economies will take place in October 2024 in Cali, in synchronization with COP 16 on biodiversity. In 2025, a World Social Forum on Intersections will be held in Montreal in the first half of June.

A challenge for education in global citizenship

The success of WSF 2024 lies not only in the event itself but also in the whole dynamic of raising awareness of social and environmental justice issues in Nepal and elsewhere. Challenges in education have preoccupied social movements mainly in the South Asian region, and have been less visible in terms of international participation. The success of the event, however, is helping to restore the importance of global citizenship education issues, a key field of adult education today.

Among ICAE’s affiliated groups, the Consejo de Educación Popular de América Latina y el Caribe (CEAAL) has made an important political and organizational contribution. CEAAL took part in various panels and workshops on Palestine, feminist issues, international solidarity, and popular education and citizenship. General Secretary Rosy Zuñiga represented CEAAL at the WSF IC meeting and played an important role in supporting the event.

ICAE was unable to be physically present but supported the event politically by registering as an organization. ICAE is grateful for the work CEAAL has done for this WSF.

The challenge of organizing resistance

With the success of Nepal, social movements and networks, citizens, and alterglobalists will now be invited to concern themselves with organizing resistance and taking up anti-systemic mobilizations so that “another world is possible”. How can we create events that mobilize the younger generation of activists? How can we encourage networking and strengthen the coordination of transnational initiatives? These are important questions for renewing the global social movement process.
In this respect, two initiatives stand out: the International Coalition to Stop Genocide in Gaza and the International Anti-Fascist Conference in Brazil. In this work, convergence is fundamental if we are to regain the initiative in the current situation. That’s why we’re calling on you to take part in the Intersections FSMI 2025, which aims to bring together different social issues.
