In Memoriam: Peter Waite – ICAE Vice President North America

It is with deep sadness and a profound sense of loss that International Council for Adult Education (ICAE) shares the news of the passing of our dear colleague and Vice President for North America, Peter Waite, on 20 March 2026.Peter’s passing came as a shock to us all. Even in recent communications, he conveyed his strong commitment to ICAE’s work and his intention to return after a period of illness. That this will no longer be possible is something we are only now beginning to fully grasp.

Peter was a deeply thoughtful and principled member of our Executive Committee. He brought clarity, integrity, and strategic vision to our collective work—always grounded in a strong belief in the transformative power of adult learning and education. His contributions to discussions on organisational sustainability, governance, and the future direction of ICAE were not only insightful but instrumental. They will continue to guide us in the period ahead.

Many of us knew Peter primarily through online collaboration, yet his presence was unmistakable. He was a careful listener, generous in his engagement, and precise in his interventions. His commitment extended beyond formal responsibilities—he cared deeply about the role of ICAE as a global voice for adult learning and education, and about the communities and learners this work ultimately serves.

We are also mindful that this loss is felt most deeply by his family, friends, and close colleagues. On behalf of ICAE, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife Lauren and to all those who knew and loved him. We hold them in our thoughts during this difficult time.

Peter’s legacy reminds us of the importance of commitment, solidarity, and thoughtful leadership in advancing adult learning and education globally. At a time when the field faces increasing challenges, his clarity of purpose and dedication to collective action remain an enduring inspiration.

He will be greatly missed.
